Devialet's first portable wireless speaker Mania becomes the focus of space

Devialet announced the launch of its first portable speaker, Devialet Mania, on November 7, 2022. Referencing the lavish designs of the pricier Devialet Phantom collection, which Devialet describes as an “ode to the Phantom,” the spherical polished ring is surrounded by luxurious fabric. It also has a handle so you can move the 2.3kg speaker from your living room to somewhere else like the garden. The bowling-ball-sized Mania speakers use a compressed version of the French company’s proprietary audio technology and feature four full-range aluminum drivers arrayed atop the cabinet and hidden beneath acoustic fabric, with two visible “push-in” bass drivers firing toward each other to reduce distortion – covering a frequency range of 30Hz to 20,000Hz. Meanwhile, Active Stereo Calibration uses four microphones to adapt the sound of Devialet Mania to its surroundings.

Place Mania in the center of the room and 360-degree stereo mode will automatically activate. Two full-range rear drivers provide a wider soundstage when you place it against a wall.

Additionally, the Devialet Mania doesn’t need to be connected to a power outlet to work (Devialet claims it’ll get 10 hours of use on a single charge at “moderate” volume levels). The Devialet Mania can be charged via a regular USB-C cable or wirelessly via a dedicated charging dock. Streaming You can listen to music over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, AirPlay 2, and Spotify Connect using the built-in Amazon Alexa voice assistant. Apart from that, there is a dedicated Devialet app and capacitive touch controls on the device itself.

Since 2007, Parisian audio technology company Devialet has been working tirelessly to make sound come alive, from peak tones to subtle nuances and even silence. Through customized technology, it has established a firm foothold in the "slightly alternative" field and sublimated the sound effects into a perfect sense of ritual. After more than 15 years of research and development, Devialet introduced the world to the superior Phantom wireless speaker product.

One could argue that the Mania is an unusual wireless speaker, and by Devialet standards, it's pretty cheap considering the Devialet's current very pleasing looks, but the fact is that the Mania doesn't stray too far from the competition and enters a highly competitive and well-regarded market segment.

The Devialet Mania is a fairly small speaker, but it manages to create a huge and coherent soundstage. There are few battery-powered speakers that can fill a space with music, even if that space is an empty garden, so the Devialet Mania has an undeniable advantage. As with all Devialet products, the bass it produces is better than it looks, with bass coming in and out without much fuzziness, and the authority of its low-frequency output means the Mania can deliver beats with considerable confidence. The Devialet has a wider range but a tighter focus than many similarly priced wireless speakers, and the confident nature of its sound means it has no trouble making its presence felt.
